nwgeogirl  > Invasive Tunicates > Shilshole Didemnum Patches
Two Didemnum patches were found by Rhoda Green near the boat launch north of Shilshole Bay marina in Seattle on the North side of this wall in Sept 2006. The patches are found about 120ft from the start of the pier on the shore. They are in 11 ft Mean Lower Low tide. The rest of the wall as well as the entire south side of this wall had no other Didemnum patches. In March 2007, the patches appear not to have grown much, if at all, in 6 months time. Most of the following photos are by Janna Nichols.

nwgeogirl > March 2007: Patch #1 was about 3 feet wide, and had grown onto the underside of the wooden boards, and is about 1" up the other side. It does not appear to have grown much, if at all, from when it was first sighted by Rhoda Green in Sept of 2006. - Photo by Janna Nichols

nwgeogirl > Patch #2 is to the left of Patch #1, on the next panel over on the wall, and up a bit higher. This patch was strange because it was very loose, and didn't appear to be very attached to the wall, unlike Patch #1. Size was about 2 feet in diameter. - Photo by Janna Nichols

nwgeogirl > March 2007: More detailed closeups of Patch #2. This shows channeling and white spicules well. - Photo by Janna Nichols
nwgeogirl > March 2007 - I carefully removed Patch #2 since it was so loose, and put it in a ziploc bag. Here it is in the parking lot. The hole in the center is where the Plumose anemone was attached. There were two Scalyhead sculpins living under the patch of Didemnum. It shrunk a lot once out of the water. - Photo by Janna Nichols
